2010 Pensions Increase

Background

Public service pensions are increased under the provisions of the Pensions (Increase) Act 1971 and Section 59 of the Social Security Pensions Act 1975. The Social Security legislation allows public service pensions to be increased annually by the same percentage as State Earnings Related Pension (SERPS) and State Second Pension (S2P) additional pensions.

In practice these pieces of legislation allow HM Treasury to apply the relevant cost of living increases (if any) announced by the DWP Minister to your public service pension.

2010

The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) has confirmed that State additional pension benefits will not be uprated from April 2010. This is because the Retail Price Index (RPI) in the 12 month period to September 2009, upon which any increase in these benefits is based, was negative (-1.4%). Therefore public service pensions will also not be up-rated from April 2010. Such benefits will remain at current cash levels.

Xafinity Paymaster has no control, or influence, over the Pensions Increase procedures and legislation. We can therefore only suggest that you address any enquiry regarding the legislation, or decision not to increase your pension in 2010, to Department for Work and Pensions, Caxton House, Tothill Street, London, SW1H 9DA. Or The Correspondence & Enquiry Unit, 2/W1, HM Treasury, 1 Horse Guards, London,  Road, SW1A 2HQ.
