Graham Withers has over 29 years of experience in working on legal matters in the pensions industry principally with pension consultancies (Mercer and Aon) and more than 20 years experience of serving as a professional trustee. He has been a trustee of a variety of schemes ranging from small money purchase to large defined benefit schemes. For over 12 years he has chaired the trustee board of a large (over £750m of assets) scheme with both final salary and money purchase sections.
Graham has worked alongside trustees, either as a trustee or adviser, in many negotiations and transactions. He has experience of supporting member nominated trustees and helping management trustees cope with conflicts in difficult situations. Among other things, he has acted as trustee during various scheme mergers and been trustee of a scheme that owned a large share holding in a principal employer that floated on the Stock Exchange. He has also acted as a trustee through a number of scheme closures, benefit reductions, commercial transactions and funding negotiations.
Graham has been involved with many investment reviews including setting and varying scheme specific benchmarks, monitoring and changing investment managers and looking at asset allocations and alternative investments.
Graham has always been an active participant in the industry and has taken part in many consultations with Government and the Regulators. He was the former Chairman of the Pensions Committee of TACT (The Association of Corporate Trustees) and a past Chairman of the Society of Pension Consultants’ Legislation Committee.
