My degree

My degree in Actuarial Science gave me a broad understanding of the areas in which an actuary can operate and acted as a firm foundation for me to continue developing my skillset in an actuarial career.

I was also fortunate to benefit from a university course that provided exemptions from the Profession’s actuarial examinations.  I am happy that I am now on the road to realising my career ambition of becoming a qualified actuary.

Choosing Xafinity

When I was applying to Xafinity I was really attracted to the role as it gave me the opportunity to work in the actuarial sector that I wanted to work in, namely pensions consultancy. I also liked the way in which the graduate process was conducted from the telephone interview through to the assessment centre. During the assessment centre, which was held across two days at a hotel, I enjoyed being challenged in every way possible. I got a clear picture of what the culture was like at Xafinity and this was the most important thing for me. Furthermore, my future Xafinity colleagues were very approachable and we all got to know each other on a personal level. It was this in particular, that would have made me disappointed had I not been given the opportunity to work with these people at Xafinity.

My job

On a daily basis, I feel involved in every aspect of the actuarial work that is completed at Xafinity from individual member calculations to preparing Trustee meeting packs. I enjoy applying my problem solving and mathematical skills to my job while benefitting from learning from experienced actuaries. Plenty of training sessions are provided to ensure that I am confident when it comes to tackling new problems. When I am stuck, I always feel comfortable approaching a colleague who is happy to point me in the right direction.

Professional development at Xafinity

At Xafinity, I have regular meetings with my manager to assess how I am getting on and how my working experience can be improved. I also receive feedback on how I have performed and any steps which can be taken to improve my work which is invaluable to my development. I am also appreciative that Xafinity support me fully through my exams by giving me a bank of study days and by paying for my study materials and tutorials.

Life at Xafinity

From day one I have been warmly welcomed and felt like an integral part of the actuarial team in Stirling. I particularly like the culture which is epitomised by the people I work with and the work life balance that exists at Xafinity. I am looking forward to embracing future challenges in a prosperous career as an actuary at Xafinty.
